Blowhole

 Blowhole

We don't want anyone to yell at us. But there is someone in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka who likes to be shouted at by others. That is a  Hummanaya  .

Hummanaya blowhole is the only known blowhole in Sri Lanka and it is considered to be the second largest blowhole in the world. Hummanaya refers to the noise, "hoo", that can be heard a distance away when the blowhole is active.

Hummanaya is a natural blowhole, and caused when sea water rushes through a submerged cavern and is pushed upwards. The sea water flows underneath the shore , and then comes out of this hole due to pressure.

My hometown is Dickwella. I have been to see this several times, because it is also close my hometown. This located 1.1 km from the small fishing village of Kudawella , which is 28km from Matara, 5km from Dickwella and 12km from Tangalle, in the Southern Province. Many local and foreign tourists come to see the blowhole.

Most of the people living in the area are fishermans. Their main source of livelihood is fishing. People who live near the Hummnaya, are involved in various trades. They create many decorations using a marine materials and they sell them. As well as , they sell a variety of sea foods. This is a tourist area. So, they can earn some income from it.

So, Hummanaya is a very special place and this is a amazing creature of nature.
