 Shanthikarma


                                           


            Shanthikarma is a special thing in Sri Lankan culture since the past. The root cause of the creation of Shantthikarma is social needs that arises, generally or individually. Shanthikarma is done with the aim of bringing peace and prosperity to all by eliminating diseases, dangers e.t.c. Various names are used for "Shanthikarma" in Sri Lanka. " Yagaya", "Maduwa", "Kankariya", "Thovil" and so on.

Shanthikarma are often based on gods and demons. Today, these Shanthikarma can be seen in the villages. The villagers have great reverence and devotion to God. The first part of the harvest, after months of farming, is offered to God. As well as Shanthikarma" are performed to protect from diseases.

                     In Shanthikarma, the songs are sung in different styles that are unique to them. There are also humorous moments in "Shanthikarma". 

                            There are three main traditions in the country as Kandyan, Low country and Sabaragamuwa and there are many shanthikarma belonging to them." Udarata kohomba kankariya", Low country  "Devol Madu", "Sanniyakuma" and Sabaragamu Pahan Madu Shanthikarma are some examples of this.

   Now a days, it is rare to see a "Shanthikarma". There is not enough time for this because people are so busy today. As well as, Shanthikarma are held today, for the purpose of making money and commercial purposes.

                                    

We have seen on television, that Shanthikarma are being held to protect against the corona epidemic. It shows us something very important. Only using the technology, will not solve everything. 

              Today's society must be modernized. Even so, This shows, our cultural elements should be continued for our future generations.
